Quilters Questions

Thank you for giving “Quilted Hugs of Gratitude”! Your volunteer efforts make Quilts for Veterans.MN possible.

Please refer to the quilt requirements below whenever you are making or preparing materials for quilts.

Choose Your Fabric and Patterns

  • Fabric used for “Quilted Hugs of Gratitude” should be quality, 100% cotton fabric appropriate for adults.
  • A “Quilted Hug of Gratitude” does not have to be red, white and blue; but patriotic colors are very popular with Veterans and Service Members.
  • Patterns and blocks can be of any design suitable for a patriotic theme.  There are a lot of patriotic panels out there that make completing a “flimsy” quick and easy.
  • Wash your fabric to remove any excess dyes or anything that can irritate a recipient.
  • Avoid juvenile and gender fabrics; and only use branch specific fabrics, if recipient is known to you.

Put It All Together

  • A “Quilted Hug of Gratitude” is to be large enough to cover an average-sized adult, with an ideal size approximately 60” x 80.” Finished size can be no smaller than 55” x 65” and no larger than 72” x 90.”
  • The Quilt consists of a top, batting, and backing.  It must be machine or hand quilted. A “Quilted Hug of Gratitude” cannot be hand tied.
  • Backings provided to the Longarm volunteer must be 8″ wider in width and 8″ longer in length.
  • Use quality, low loft batting such as cotton, cotton blends, polyester, or polyester blends.  Quilting should be appropriate for the quilt and not overly dense, which can reduce the loft of the quilt.
  • Double fold, also known as French Fold, binding is recommended for durability. Hand stitch or neatly machine stitch binding.
  • A “Quilted Hug of Gratitude” must be labeled as such and include the name of the veteran or service member and date presented.
